PQIP Annual Report
16 April 2018
We are delighted to present the first Annual Report of the national Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme, which is being led by the
NIAA Health Services Research Centre (HSRC)
at the
Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA)
.
Click here or on the cover below to read the PQIP Annual Report 2017-18
Improvement Opportunities
This first report highlights many opportunities for improving care before and during the perioperative hospital stay.
In particular, the preoperative optimisation of anaemia and diabetes, implementation and adherence to enhanced recovery pathways, and optimisation of pain management are our top improvement targets for hospitals over the next 12 months and beyond.
The potential benefits for patients and the NHS are clear: currently, 11% of PQIP patients experience a serious complication, and this extends average (mean) postoperative length of stay by between 12 and 20 days, depending on the type of surgery.
Hospital level reports
Every participating hospital now has access to a personalised report of their local data to accompany this national summary, which is available on the ‘Reports’ section of this website (visible only to logged in users).
We hope that this information will provide a strong foundation from which hospitals can take positive steps to improve care where required. If you do not yet have a login for the secure area of this website, please ask your local PI to organise access for you.
Thank you!
The PQIP team is incredibly grateful to our funders, the RCoA and the Health Foundation, for the support of the NIHR’s Clinical Research Network, and in particular to every local investigator for their time and engagement.
